Reactions to Sean Wilson’s Story of Lee

We’ve received two great endorsements on Sean Michael (“AX: Alternative Manga”) Wilson and Chie Kutsuwada’s upcoming Story of Lee, shipping next month:

“The fear of cultural imperialism, the dread of loss, the collapse of family, the still-prevalent and widespread sexism in both Eastern and Western society – big themes, but present in every intercultural love story. Chie Kutsuwada’s delicate art and Sean Michael Wilson’s frank script sum up the tensions in ‘The Story of Lee’. This isn’t just a book for teens, but something parents should read, both to remember their own years of surging hormones and thunderous emotions, and to understand the strange land their children inhabit.”
– Helen McCarthy, author of ‘The Art of Osamu Tezuka’.

“I very much enjoyed ‘ The Story of Lee.’ It took me to a place I’d never been before – not just Hong Kong, which Wilson and Kutsuwada bring vividly to life. But equally as interesting was the way that the creators explore the worlds of their interesting and complex characters. It’s the worlds of these characters that makes ‘The Story of Lee’ so memorable.”
– Jason Sacks, Comics Bulletin.

And good for Christmas, the hardcover edition of:

CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED DELUXE, Vol. 5:
TREASURE ISLAND
Robert Louis Stevenson, David Chauvel, David Simon

The themes of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel Treasure Island: loyalty, adventure, morality and especially coming of age, make it ideal for “Classics Illustrated Deluxe.” Stevenson’s riveting tale has become more and more influential over the years; serving as the basis for such popular portrayals of piracy as one-legged sailors with parrots on their shoulders, treasure maps where an “X” marks the spot, to the specific style we think of when imagining pirates speak. David Chauvel’s faithful adaptation combined with Fred Simon’s vibrant art truly captures the excitement experienced by readers both old and young alike that this classic has invoked for so many years.
61/2 x 9, 144 pages, full color hardcover: $17.99, ISBN 978-1-59707-185-7

Sean, back from the US and A.

I was just in the USA again, at a convention held in Minneapolis College of Art and Design – a good little academic style con, with cosplay fun thrown in. I made a talk about ‘Ax and Gekiga: maturer style manga’, to a full house and a good reception – thank you all. and thanks to ‘Big Brain comics’ in Minneapolis, that hosted an after party for me on sunday night. and NICE! to the ‘Brit Bar’ there, who gave me a chance to eat ‘Flake’ and ‘Curly wurly’ chocolate bars from Britain! The ‘Ax: alternative manga’ book continues to get very positive critical and public reaction… plus my Kodansha book ‘Hagakure’ sold well among the manga fans at the con. But now I came back to Japan – my adopted home!

THE STORY OF LEE, my book with NBM is out now in diamond’s October PREVIEWS catalogu, so book your order now shops and people! Its an original story by myself, not an adaptation this time! Although its not a true story,  I use many autobiographical aspects in it, plus a lot of references to real places in Hong Kong, where the story is set. The focus of the story is on the female’s character’s point of view regarding her relationship with her western boyfriend and strict father. The book should appeal to late teenage and older females readers who dig the more sophisticated ‘shoujo’  style, or the mature  ‘Josei’ manga style.

Since the art is by a Japanese lady, Chie Kutsuwada, then I hope that manga purist’s will find it acceptable too – ongaishimasu! The above pages are a scene where Lee has a heart to heart with her dying grandmother.

Oh, a  neat little bit of coincidence – as I was writing this my friend was looking through “Erotic Comics vol 2′ from the UK publisher ILEX. As I went over i saw that they were reading a bit that describes such erotic comics by NBM!

Welcome to Sean Michael Wilson

I’d like to welcome to this blog Sean Michael Wilson, whose new book The Story of Lee will be shipping from us to comics stores in December. He’s also noted for AX, Alternative Manga from Top Shelf which has been getting a lot of press and he’s got an adaptation of a famous Japanese classic tale coming out from Kodansha here.

Prolific guy for a ‘wee brain.’ Meeting him is to enjoy his Scot’s brogue, btw. A Scot living in Japan for years and into manga aplenty. And that’s no blarney, mate!

The art for this is by Japanese Chie Kutsuwada who lves in… the UK.

How mixed up is that?!
